The purpose of this qualification is to ensure that students are well prepared to progress into a career in business, finance or professional accountancy, or into further education. All of the units within the qualification are mandatory: Four units are assessed individually in end-of-unit assessments, but this qualification also includes a synoptic assessment that students sit towards the end of the last unit.
The Foundation Certificate is where you’ll develop your skills in finance administration: double-entry bookkeeping, purchase, sales and general ledgers,basic costing and using accounting software.
The synoptic assessment draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across the qualification: A student completing this qualification will develop accountancy skills in double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing, as well as an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. Students will learn to use accounting software and to develop the professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute effectively in the workplace. Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, IT skills and an understanding of the business environment, all of which are covered by this qualification.

Important information about all costs involved in completing an AAT qualification
When you purchase an AAT course you will also need to pay for:
- Each exam will cost approximately £100. This includes the AAT exam fee and the centre fee for using their facilities to sit the exam. There is one exam per each unit plus the Synoptic.
- You will also need be a member of the AAT which will cost between £90 for a renewal or a new membership fee of £140 paid direct to the AAT.
The Level 2 AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting will prepare you for entry level accounting roles. It delivers a solid foundation in finance administration – covering areas such as double entry bookkeeping to basic costing principles and using accounting software. Individuals who are currently working within an accounting environment and looking to cement their experience with a nationally recognised qualification. After completing the Level 2 many students continue their journey with us to study the advanced Diploma Level 3.
To complete the Certificate, you will be required to complete five separate exams which take up to two hours to complete. Exam centres can be located using the AAT web site. AAT Membership is also required at a cost of £138 which is arranged directly with the AAT.

There are no specific entry requirements and learners do not need to have teaching practice hours to achieve the qualification. However, learners must be at least 19 years of age at certification.

Learners can complete and upload or download and complete offline before uploading to their login area.
